Food Rewards
So the doctor suggested we use a reward system for food, because "That works for everything!". Well she doesn't know Tristan that well. He is one stubborn 3 year old. It has been 2 months and he's tried 10 new things. I guess that's better than nothing. It started with A LOT of refusals to try stuff even though he would get a treat. He would first just take the tiniest bite you've ever seen to get the sticker, but now he's started to do a lot better. He still refuses a lot, but every once in awhile he will happily take a real bite or even finish one whole vegetable. Like last night I offered him some swiss chard and he ate a whole piece. The other day he tried a radish and ate a whole carrot. He still mostly refuses meat, but vegetables are better anyway! The way we do the chart is that for 3 tries he got a cookie, four tries an ice cream, and five is a toy. By five though he has to eat the whole serving of whatever food, not just try it. This partially works because we stopped letting him have treats regularly. He lost his weekly trip for a cookie with daddy and we went to ice cream the other night but he wouldn't eat dinner so he didn't get any (mean I know!) So the fact that he gets to go to Menchie's tonight for frozen yogurt because he filled up his 4 try row is a HUGE deal to him!

I so admire your commitment to the rewards. What a great system. I usually was the one to give up on or forget the plan.

It's always been a mystery where kids their ideas about foods they think they don't like. Guess we're all a little skeptical at times - am not sure I would try haggis! You're a wonder about being so deligent! Keep up the good work - Swiss chard!?!
